Effectively Teaching AAC: Beyond the Therapy Session

The teaching of an AAC device goes beyond what a speech pathologist can achieve in a therapy session. Even the most skilled therapist will struggle to achieve authentic communication if certain foundational components are not in place outside the therapy room. This presentation not only looks at ways to improve therapy, but it describes the foundational components necessary to effectively teach AAC and overcome barriers. Specific implementation strategies and tools will be shared.

Prior attendance of a 1-Day LAMP class is helpful, but not mandatory.


Participants will be able to:

  1. describe 4 foundational components necessary for successful AAC implementation
  2. discuss 4 barriers to successful AAC implementation and describe ways to overcome these barriers
  3. identify 5 or more resources to support AAC users in achieving authentic communication

15 minutes - Background, Overview of Project and Student Outcomes
60 minutes - Dissection of the 4 Foundational Components: Implementation Strategies and Tools
10 minutes - Conclusion and Questions

Lynsey Lobdell, M.S., CCC-SLP

Instructor Lynsey Lobdell

Lynsey Lobdell, M.S., CCC-SLP  is a speech-language pathologist who specializes in supporting children with complex communication needs using augmentative/alternative communication. Lynsey holds a Bachelor of Science degree in communication sciences and disorders from the University of Arkansas and a Master of Science degree in Bilingual Speech-Language Pathology from Arizona State University. She is fluent in English and Spanish and holds an English as a Second Language Endorsement from Arkansas Tech University. Lynsey has worked in a variety of settings including the public schools, early intervention, home health, and private practice, and has served on the Board of Directors for Autism Involves Me since 2014.

Brie Norton, M.S., CCC-SLP

Instructor Brie Lobdell

Brie Norton, M.S., CCC-SLP is a Speech-Language Pathologist in Northwest Arkansas who specializes in supporting individuals who have complex communication needs and use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). A 2007 graduate of Vassar College, Brie’s degrees in Early Childhood Education and Psychology led her to pursue her Master of Science degree in Communication Disorders at Mercy College. For the past 8 years Brie has worked in the Bentonville Schools with students, staff, and caregivers to ensure all students have a comprehensive communication system. She also provides training to staff, family, and private service providers to increase knowledge of best practices in the field of augmentative and alternative communication.

Submission Deadlines

Live online classes:  Participants wanting ASHA CEUs must be registered, "join" the class through his/her unique confirmation email letter and participate for the entire duration of the class. No partial credits will be submitted. Participants have 15 days to submit all ASHA paperwork to PRC-Saltillo. ASHA paperwork received after 15 days will not be accepted. Your entrance and exit of the class are timestamped and you must stay logged in on a computer or tablet for the entire class in order to receive ASHA CEUs. Call-in only attendance does not qualify for ASHA CEUs.

In-person classes:  All ASHA paperwork must be submitted to the presenter by the end of the training day.

Participants wanting ASHA CEUs for a multiple day training must attend all days. In addition, if there is a registration fee associated with the class and payment is not received, PRC-Saltillo will not submit your request for ASHA CEUs.

PRC-Saltillo has 45 days after the seminar to turn in your ASHA Participant form. Once ASHA receives your participant form, please allow 4 weeks for the course to appear on your ASHA transcript. 

ASHA Information

An annual ASHA CE Registry fee is required to register ASHA CEUs. ASHA CE Registry fees are paid by the participant directly to the ASHA National Office. The annual ASHA CE Registry fee allows registration of an unlimited number of ASHA CEUs for the calendar year. PRC presentations will focus exclusively on Accent, PRiO, NuEye, Look, NuPoint, Unity, UNIDAD, LAMP Words for Life, LAMP Words for Life - Sp/En, LAMP Words for Life - VI,  CoreScanner, Essence, WordPower, Explore AAC, Realize Language, or AAC Language Lab and will not include information regarding other similar or related augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices or software.

Saltillo presentations will focus exclusively on ChatFusion, NovaChat, TouchChat, VocabPC, MultiChat15, WordPower, TouchChat app, Explore AAC, or TouchChat website.
